4K Ultra HD - The Next Big Thing This Holiday Season

Elemental Holiday CardThis week, Elemental debuted newly-produced, complimentary 4K test clips for general purpose use. Ultra HD, generally captured at a resolution of 3840 x 2160, is on the immediate horizon and poised to enter the mainstream. Standardized last summer, 4K video has four times more pixels —and is four times the resolution — of the 1080p high definition display format. 8 million pixels provide a lot of detail! Before we know it, we’ll be viewing sports and other widely distributed video content in glorious 4K Ultra HD.

Here at Elemental, we noted the current lack of quality 4K test content and decided to take matters into our own hands. We picked the best of the best video test clips and recreated them using a RED® Epic 4K camera. Not only are these sequences fun to watch, we hope that they will be a useful resource for those testing their own video processing systems. These clips are available for download here.

4K PhotoshootHow did we go about recreating these videos? We assembled the sets at Elemental, recruited the actors—most of the talent proudly office-grown— and turned part of our downtown Portland headquarters into a video studio. Each classic test clip was watched hundreds of times and no detail was too small to make note of and discuss. For off-site sets and shooting, we were particularly blown away by the community’s willingness to help make this project a reality. Special thanks go out to Lorentz Bruun Construction and the United States Coast Guard Station in Portland.

Shooting with the RED® Epic camera was an especially miserable task for our talented cameraman...just kidding! He was like a kid on Christmas morning as he excitedly described the capabilities of the camera to anyone interested. We hope you enjoy watching these clips as much as we enjoyed producing them. Happy holidays!

Live From South Africa: Kicking and Streaming

World Cup 2006:  - "Did you see that goal by Brazil?"
                             - "No, I wish.  I'm at work.  I'm tracking the play-by-play online, though.  Was it a good shot?"
World Cup 2010:  - "Did you see that goal by Brazil?"
                             - "Yes, which one do you mean? I saw both! That first one by Maicon was so amazing that I had to rewind my stream to see it again.  I thought for sure the goalie deflected it, but in slow motion you could see that he just bent it right in. Well I need to go file this report!"

In the technology world, four years is an eternity.  So, those of us woking on streaming technology not only understand its evolution in the last four years, but can truly appreciate how the presence of video everywhere has revolutionized coverage of the 2010 World Cup.

Elemental Accelerator Product Tour Video

As you may expect, video is near and dear to our hearts at Elemental. Those who have been following us for years will certainly recall the original Badaboom commercials, which tended to incite strong reactions: some people loved 'em, others thought they were too corny. We believe our newest foray into production is consistent with the professional grade product it represents.

With the Elemental Accelerator product tour video, we wanted to increase the use of motion graphics to create a visceral, impactful illustration of the power of our GPU-accelerated software. Lisa, product manager, and Julie, communications manager, drove the process working closely with local production company Funnelbox Studios to create a unique, professional overview of Elemental Accelerator in 2 short minutes. Check it out and let us know what you think!
