The Weather Channel Selects Elemental to Power Cross-Platform Video Services

Elemental Live supports multiscreen content delivery to the network’s widely deployed digital and mobile applications

Portland, Ore. – March 5, 2013 – Elemental Technologies, the leading supplier of video solutions for multiscreen content delivery, today announced The Weather Channel is using Elemental video processing systems to support live programming and simulcasts to 100+ million U.S. households.

Elemental® Live video processing systems are deployed in The Weather Channel operations center in Atlanta, Georgia to help the network deliver top weather stories to viewers, including live video streaming of major weather events and breaking weather-related news.

For example, The Weather Channel is using Elemental systems to stream live content to the company’s YouTube channel.  When The Weather Channel streamed live coverage of Hurricane Sandy to YouTube in 2012, Elemental systems powered delivery of video over the duration of the event. There were more than 12 million total live video streams viewed during the course of Sandy on weather.com and YouTube, with a peak of 167,000 concurrent users.

To support the growing demand for its content on portable devices, The Weather Channel uses Elemental Live systems to format and stream video to its highly successful mobile applications. With more than 100 million cumulative app downloads on all tablets and smartphones, The Weather Channel reaches 38 million mobile consumers monthly through weather.com on web and mobile applications. The cable network also reaches 50 million web consumers on weather.com and desktop platforms.

“The success and reach of our mobile applications is a testament to our users, to our technology team that creates the best apps available on every screen, and to video processing solutions from Elemental that power our multiscreen offerings,” said Bryson Koehler, executive vice president and chief information officer for The Weather Channel. “With the astounding growth of our digital audience for our premium content on web and mobile screens, assuring a high-quality, widely available viewing experience is vital.”

“We are thrilled to support The Weather Channel in its coverage of vital weather-related news, information and programming and to help facilitate the infrastructural transitions key to increasing audience reach across multiple screens and new revenue streams,” said Dan Marshall, SVP worldwide sales and service at Elemental. “Our powerful video processing software delivers the high level of quality and efficiency required to support the network’s distribution of market-leading content to a wide array of devices.”

Elemental will exhibit its unified video solutions at several upcoming industry events: OTTCON March 19-20 in Santa Clara, California, TV Connect March 19-21 in London, England and NAB April 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
