HEVC / H.265 Video Compression
The video engine that powers solutions from Elemental now features support for HEVC/H.265 (High Efficiency Video Coding). As video distribution consumes more network capacity, HEVC/H.265 is structured to drive bandwidth efficiency gains between 30 to 50 percent as compared to the AVC/H.264 standard. These efficiency gains promise that HEVC/H.265 will positively impact the video industry in a variety of ways, including:

- Lowered cost of managed and unmanaged video distribution
- Widened reach for bandwidth constrained mobile and IPTV operators
- Improved QOE of OTT services to match traditional broadcast delivery
Elemental has deep experience implementing video codecs from specification to full implementation using programmable graphics processing units (GPUs) and standard software tools. HEVC/H.265 is an ideal fit for GPU encoding. HEVC/H.265 encoding presents computational complexities up to ten times that of H.264 encoding, for which the massively parallel GPU architecture is well-suited. With 500 different ways to encode each macro block, the demanding processing requirements of H.265 will strain many existing hardware platforms. Elemental’s software-upgradeable approach allows for incorporation of new compression technologies much more quickly than products featuring fixed hardware encoding and decoding, easing the transition to HEVC/H.265 within legacy MPEG-2 and H.264 infrastructures.
